The United States launched a new offensive against Iranian targets, including locations near Qeshm Island, Sirik, and Bandar Abbas, citing Iranian aggression against three commercial ships. Among the vessels struck was the Qatari LNG tanker Al Rekayyat, which issued a distress call after a drone strike near its engine room. US Central Command labeled the incident a dangerous violation of the existing 60-day cease-fire agreement.
In tandem with the military response, the US Treasury revoked a crucial sanctions waiver that had permitted limited Iranian oil exports. This move effectively ends the economic relief provisions of the memorandum of understanding signed last month. While Washington maintains the decision is a direct consequence of Tehran’s failure to ensure safe passage for commercial shipping, Iran’s Foreign Ministry rejected the justification. Tehran accused the United States of violating the "Islamabad Understanding" and warned that it would pursue all necessary measures to protect its national security.
