Meta Pulls AI Photo Tool Following User Backlash

Meta has abruptly disabled a new AI feature that allowed users to manipulate photos from public Instagram accounts without consent. The tool, which faced immediate criticism for its potential for abuse and lack of notification to account holders, was deactivated just days after its public introduction by the company.

The feature was part of a broader suite of tools launched by Meta Superintelligence Labs, specifically centered on the Muse Image generator. It allowed users to reference public Instagram accounts via @-mentions to produce AI-generated imagery. Because the system operated without alerting the original account owners, it triggered a wave of privacy concerns and swift rejection from the community.

Following pressure from users and talent agencies, including CAA, Meta acknowledged the failure in a blog post on Friday. The company stated that while the intent was to provide a creative resource, the implementation missed the mark. This withdrawal arrives as major platforms struggle to establish effective guardrails against the misuse of generative AI, which has frequently been weaponized to create non-consensual imagery of public figures.
