Trump Shuts Down Inquiries on Strait of Hormuz Closure

Conflict emerged Sunday as Donald Trump twice refused to address the status of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping lane. The president dismissed questions from NBC News and CNN regarding the waterway's closure, demanding that journalists pivot to other topics while citing the death of Senator Lindsey Graham.

The president’s refusal to engage came shortly after Iran shuttered the strait following the collapse of a bilateral ceasefire agreement. During an interview with Kristen Welker of NBC News, Trump insisted the route remained open, rebuffing inquiries about contradictory intelligence from US Central Command. He deflected further questioning by claiming he wished to honor the late Senator Lindsey Graham, who passed away on Saturday.

CNN’s Jake Tapper faced a similar response when he sought clarification on the standoff. Trump maintained that the strait was open "as far as we’re concerned" and warned the journalist to stick to the pre-approved agenda. This dismissive stance drew sharp criticism from media observers, including Ana Marie Cox and Kai Ryssdal, who argued that the executive branch should not dictate the parameters of journalistic inquiry. The ongoing instability in the region, which began with the initiation of hostilities in February, continues to fuel volatility in global energy markets and domestic gasoline prices.
