Nikita Bier, head of product at X, announced the update Monday, noting that the previous omission of mutual connection data had inadvertently marginalized friends within reply threads. The adjustment seeks to transform the site’s interaction layer, making it feel less like a digital battleground and more like an interconnected social space. Beyond cooling down heated discourse, the change is designed to help interest-based clusters form more naturally.
X Adjusts Feed Algorithm to Prioritize Mutual Connections
X is recalibrating its discovery algorithm to prioritize content from mutual followers, a move intended to shift the platform’s reply sections away from hostile exchanges. By surfacing posts from people who follow users back, the company aims to foster tighter community clusters rather than the standard torrent of anonymous voices.

This modification arrives as part of a broader strategy to reposition X as a hub for creators. The platform recently overhauled its compensation model to favor original content over aggregation and launched an integrated video editor to streamline production. These efforts reflect a push to retain users amidst increasing competition from Meta’s Threads, which has recently implemented its own algorithmic controls and reached the milestone of 500 million monthly active users.
