U.S. Backs Iraq-Syria Pipeline to Bypass Strait of Hormuz

The United States is throwing its weight behind plans to restore the Kirkuk-Baniyas oil pipeline, a move designed to secure Iraq’s energy exports and neutralize Iran’s ability to throttle global supply through the Strait of Hormuz.

Special Presidential Envoy Thomas Barrack has spearheaded discussions involving Iraqi and Syrian officials alongside industry giants like Chevron. The initiative aims to rehabilitate the damaged link to the Mediterranean, providing Baghdad a critical bypass for its crude that currently remains hostage to regional geopolitical tensions. This strategy serves a dual purpose: bolstering Syria’s post-war economic recovery while stripping Tehran of its primary maritime leverage.

Beyond the Kirkuk-Baniyas route, officials are evaluating additional land corridors, including a potential line from Basra to Haditha with extensions toward Turkey or Jordan. Iraq’s urgency is driven by staggering financial losses incurred during recent transit disruptions that forced a sharp reduction in national production. By encouraging U.S. corporate investment in these infrastructure projects, Washington seeks to stabilize the region through energy integration, framing the expansion as a pathway to both regional prosperity and exclusive commercial opportunity for American firms.
