Introduced in 2024, the Managed Account system provides a buffer between a parent’s algorithm and a child’s listening history. This ensures that a child's song choices do not influence the parent’s personalized recommendations or their annual Spotify Wrapped summary. Beyond algorithmic separation, the feature offers granular control over playback, allowing parents to block specific artists or songs. By default, the platform disables explicit content and video playback for these profiles, while also restricting interactive elements like messaging to keep the environment age-appropriate.
Spotify Extends Parental Controls to Free Tier Accounts
Parents in the U.S., U.K., Australia, France, Germany, and the Netherlands can now manage their children’s Spotify experience without a paid subscription. The streaming platform is opening its Managed Account feature to free-tier users, allowing for content restrictions and independent listening profiles that keep kids' habits separate from the main account.

This expansion arrives as tech companies face mounting regulatory pressure to increase safety features for younger users. The new settings provide a middle ground between open access and the highly restrictive Spotify Kids app. To activate the controls, Family Plan account holders can navigate to the 'Add a Member' section within their app settings, selecting the option to add a listener under 13. Spotify intends to roll out these parental tools to additional global markets in the near future.
