Apple Intelligence gains regulatory clearance for Chinese market debut

The Cyberspace Administration of China has granted approval for Apple Intelligence, clearing the path for the iPhone maker to deploy generative AI features across its ecosystem. The rollout relies on a strategic partnership with Alibaba, which will integrate its Qwen model into iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS.

Apple Intelligence gains regulatory clearance for Chinese market debut

This regulatory green light follows a period of intense negotiation and failed discussions with other local tech giants. Apple previously explored potential collaborations with Baidu, ByteDance, and DeepSeek, but those efforts stalled due to technical integration hurdles. By securing Alibaba as its partner, Apple resolves the primary obstacle preventing the deployment of its AI suite within the mainland, where the company recently saw a 28% surge in quarterly sales to $20.5 billion.

Alibaba confirmed that Qwen will power specific Apple Intelligence functions, including text and image processing. While the company has not provided a firm release date, the market responded sharply to the announcement. U.S.-listed shares of Alibaba climbed more than 6% following the report. This expansion is critical for Apple, which recently reclaimed the second-largest smartphone market share in China, as it looks to maintain its momentum through advanced software capabilities.
