Trump Threatens Tariffs on Canada Over Wildfire Smoke

Donald Trump has threatened to impose new tariffs on Canada, blaming the country for the wildfire smoke currently blanketing parts of the United States. The former president accused Ottawa of “willful negligence” regarding forest management, ignoring the scientific consensus that climate change is fueling the intensity of these seasonal disasters.

Trump’s threat follows a similar move by Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio), who pledged to introduce legislation sanctioning Canadian officials over the air quality crisis. On his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed the smoke is costing the U.S. billions of dollars and demanded that these costs be recouped through trade penalties. The rhetoric has drawn sharp rebukes from critics who argue that targeting a neighbor ignores the role of the fossil fuel industry in driving the extreme heat and drought conditions behind the blazes.

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) dismissed the administration’s focus on forest management as a dangerous distraction, noting that more than 800 wildfires are currently affecting 115 million people across 20 states. Advocates, including Cassidy DiPaola of the Make Polluters Pay campaign, likened the blame directed at Canada to criticizing a homeowner for an arsonist's actions. While Republicans push to shield energy companies from climate liability, opponents are calling for a shift toward taxing record oil profits to fund wildfire relief and public health infrastructure.
