Vertu’s $6,880 AI phone tests the limits of luxury

Vertu, the UK-based manufacturer of high-end handsets, is targeting chief executives with its new Alphafold, a luxury device priced at $6,880. More than just a status symbol, the phone centers on the Hermes Agent—an AI assistant designed to automate complex executive workflows, ranging from contract analysis to business travel planning.

The Alphafold is physically distinct from mainstream foldables, featuring a calfskin leather exterior and titanium accents that lean into its premium branding. Beneath this aesthetic, however, the device shares clear hardware DNA with the $1,100 ZTE Nubia Fold. Vertu confirmed this connection, noting a supply-chain partnership for the hardware platform while maintaining that it oversees the luxury materials, custom software, and concierge services that define the user experience.

Performance of the Hermes Agent remains uneven. During testing, the AI demonstrated a greater willingness than Samsung’s Gemini to execute multi-step tasks autonomously. Yet, this independence often resulted in errors, such as incorrect calendar scheduling and failures in basic time-based reminders. While the agent excels at parsing local documents, it lacks the conversational consistency and reliability of more mature platforms. For high-stakes tasks, Vertu offers an escalation path to a human concierge, acknowledging that current AI capabilities are not yet a substitute for professional human oversight.

Security is a primary pillar of the company’s pitch to the C-suite, with Vertu promising encrypted conversations and a dedicated A5 security chip for hardware-level data protection. Despite these additions and the inclusion of enterprise-ready features, the device struggles to justify its steep price tag. The hardware feels dated compared to current competitors, and the AI platform is clearly still in development. For most executives, the Alphafold functions better as a luxury accessory than as a reliable, AI-driven business tool.
