The Houthi leadership framed the maritime embargo as direct retaliation for the Saudi-led siege of Yemen. While Riyadh has yet to issue a formal response, the strategic stakes are immense. Iran had previously directed the group to prepare for a closure of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait should U.S. strikes against Iranian infrastructure persist. A sustained shutdown could jeopardize roughly 7% of the global oil supply, creating a two-front vulnerability for Saudi exports.
This declaration follows nine consecutive nights of U.S. military operations across Iran, targeting industrial and power centers in Tabriz, Chabahar, and Bandar Mahshahr. In response, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed successful strikes against U.S. assets in Kuwait, Syria, and Jordan. The infrastructure damage is already manifesting in the energy sector: satellite data shows oil transfers outside the Strait of Hormuz have plummeted, while supertanker crossings have dropped from eight per day in June to just two per day last week.
