Iran’s UN ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani has accused U.S. forces of launching missile strikes against the unfinished Karun nuclear power plant in Khuzestan province. The incident, part of an 18th wave of recent regional attacks, has sparked urgent warnings from Tehran regarding the safety of civil nuclear infrastructure.
The International Atomic Energy Agency clarified that the facility poses no immediate risk of radioactive release, as the site remains in early construction phases and currently holds no nuclear fuel. Development of the 300-megawatt plant began in December 2022. This escalation coincides with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and a renewed U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports, severely hindering ongoing diplomatic efforts to restore peace between Washington and Tehran.
