Light pivots to plastic flip phones in bid for Gen Z market

Kaiwei Tang, who helped design the original Motorola Razr, is returning to his roots with the Light Flip. After years of building minimalist smartphones, the startup is betting that Gen Z users will trade high-end aluminum for a colorful, $299 tactile device designed to curb doomscrolling and digital addiction.

The Light Flip strips away the premium components of its predecessors—dropping the NFC reader, selfie camera, and touch screen—to reach a more accessible price point. By opting for plastic over metal, the company is also introducing a vibrant color palette, including yellow, red, and navy. Co-founder Joe Hollier noted that the device retains the core Light Phone OS, offering tools like calendars and calculators, while bringing back the nostalgic experience of T9 predictive texting.

To bridge the gap between high-tech dependency and minimalism, Light is launching the Flip Your Life program. This initiative includes bi-weekly newsletters to guide users through the lifestyle shift of abandoning a standard smartphone. The company is also piloting financing options with Noble Mobile, allowing customers to bundle the device with a service plan for $39 per month. Despite an expected ship date of April 2027, the startup aims to foster a community-driven movement that prioritizes intentional living over the convenience of constant connectivity.
