CFA Institute Maps Out AI-Driven Structural Shifts in Global Finance

Artificial intelligence is doing more than automating office tasks; it is fundamentally altering how capital markets function. The CFA Institute has launched a new research series aimed at helping regulators and industry leaders move beyond reactive measures to address systemic changes in price formation and market integrity.

CFA Institute Maps Out AI-Driven Structural Shifts in Global Finance

The inaugural paper, Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Finance: A Framework for Structural Change, introduces a transition model built on four pillars: capability, adoption, substitution, and recomposition. These forces threaten to pull the industry into one of four distinct realities, ranging from "augmented markets" that merely sharpen existing workflows to "model-mediated markets" where AI assumes primary control over capital allocation and risk calibration.

Mona Naqvi, managing director at the CFA Institute Research and Policy Center, emphasizes that the shift demands a proactive approach to governance. As AI models and data frameworks increasingly align across institutions—a phenomenon termed "cognitive convergence"—the industry faces new challenges regarding systemic resilience. While executive recruiters maintain that human-centric, relationship-driven roles in wealth management remain secure, the integration of AI is already displacing routine tasks and forcing advisors to adapt to clients who arrive at meetings already armed with their own AI-generated insights.
