Apple Prepares to Replace iPhone Upgrade with Broad Leasing Program

Starting July 28, Apple will pivot its hardware strategy by launching a comprehensive lease-to-own program in partnership with Klarna. The initiative, titled Apple Upgrade, replaces the existing iPhone-specific service by extending financing options across the company’s entire lineup of iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches.

Customers will be able to lock into 24-month terms for mobile devices or 36-month periods for computers, with the option to return hardware or upgrade at the end of the cycle. While the move simplifies payment structures, some transactions may carry additional fees. This transition arrives as the company grapples with the industry-wide memory chip shortage, often called "RAMageddon," which has pushed hardware costs upward and necessitated recent price hikes.

By folding its legacy financing into a broader scheme, Apple is attempting to mitigate the friction of higher retail prices while maintaining consumer loyalty. The rollout coincides with a tumultuous period for the tech giant, which is simultaneously navigating a leadership transition under CEO John Ternus and pursuing legal action against OpenAI over alleged trade secret theft. For Apple, the leasing program serves as a critical mechanism to stabilize demand and ensure steady hardware adoption despite the volatile supply chain landscape.
