Over the past year, the company has funded at least a dozen natural gas power plants, including a 7.5-gigawatt project in Louisiana that rivals the annual electricity consumption of South Dakota.

Meta maintains that it remains committed to matching its operational electricity usage with 100% clean energy. To bridge the gap between its carbon-heavy infrastructure and these goals, the company relies on environmental attribute certificates—financial instruments that allow firms to offset data center consumption by funding renewable projects in distant locations. Critics point out that this accounting method contrasts with the hourly matching standards increasingly adopted by peers, which prioritize localized battery storage and consistent renewable output.
