Sam Altman’s World secures $52.5M in private token sale

Strategic investors have committed $52.5 million to World, the biometric verification startup co-founded by Sam Altman, through a private sale of WLD tokens. The transaction, led by Pantera Capital, imposes a 12-month lockup period on the assets, signaling long-term institutional backing despite the company’s recent operational hurdles.

The capital will flow directly to the World Foundation, a Cayman Islands-based entity responsible for overseeing the project’s infrastructure and network expansion. Alongside Pantera Capital, the funding round drew participation from firms including Bain Capital Crypto, Susquehanna Crypto, Selini Capital, and Eightco Holdings. This infusion arrives as the San Francisco-based developer, Tools for Humanity, attempts to stabilize its trajectory following a round of staff layoffs in June.

At the core of the project is the "proof of human" protocol, which utilizes metallic devices known as Orbs to scan human irises and generate unique cryptographic identifiers. These identifiers facilitate the creation of World IDs, which the company markets as a necessary defense against the rise of sophisticated AI agents and bots. While the venture recently secured partnerships with major platforms like Tinder and Ticketmaster, it continues to face significant challenges in achieving mass consumer adoption and navigating the regulatory scrutiny that prompted its transition from the original Worldcoin branding.
