Australia Accelerates Shift from Coal to Renewables
With coal’s share of electricity generation falling from roughly 80 percent in 2000 to under 50 percent in 2025, Australia is undergoing an industrial transformation. Driven by market forces and aging infrastructure, the nation is pivoting toward a diverse energy mix anchored by wind, solar, and massive battery storage capacity.
The transition is gaining momentum as coal-fired power stations reach the end of their operational lives. Daniel Westerman, CEO of the Australian Energy Market Operator, notes that these plants are being replaced by renewable sources backed by storage and transmission infrastructure. While government initiatives like the Renewable Energy Target aim to reduce emissions, the shift is primarily fueled by the economic reality that renewables currently offer the lowest-cost path for electricity production.
Renewable sources accounted for 42.7 percent of the nation's generation in 2025, up from 38.9 percent the previous year. Wind energy leads this segment, supported by a world-leading adoption of rooftop solar, now present in four million homes. The storage sector is expanding even more aggressively; utility-scale battery capacity surged 233 percent between 2024 and 2025. This growth has positioned Australia as the world's third-largest utility-scale battery market, bolstered by an influx of affordable components from China.
Investment is following the shift, as evidenced by the government's recent endorsement of 16 projects in New South Wales valued at $22.1 billion. Through the newly established Investment Delivery Authority, the state is streamlining funding for pumped hydro, wind farms, and battery systems. As companies prioritize energy security and decarbonization, the move away from fossil fuels appears to be accelerating, leaving behind a decades-long reliance on coal to embrace a more decentralized energy future.
