In Virginia’s 30th House of Delegates district, the debate has become a central campaign issue. Both Republican incumbent Geary Higgins and Democratic challenger John McAuliff are vying to position themselves as the primary opponent of new construction. McAuliff describes the opposition as an organic reaction to the scale of resource consumption, noting that residents are increasingly unwilling to subsidize the operations of the world’s largest corporations through their own utility bills.
The environmental toll is fueling similar conflicts nationwide. According to the International Energy Agency, a single AI data center can consume as much electricity as 100,000 households, with the largest projects requiring twenty times that amount. Beyond the grid, the massive water volumes needed for cooling systems are drying up local wells, as seen in East Vincent, Pennsylvania, and Mansfield, Georgia, where residents have reported murky water since Meta began operations in 2018. Despite company-commissioned studies disputing these claims, local skepticism remains deeply entrenched.
