Former Perplexity engineer launches Polar to automate knowledge work
Kevin Jiang, a former Perplexity developer who worked on the Comet project, has introduced Polar, an AI-first browser tailored specifically for professional workflows. The startup recently secured $5.7 million in seed funding led by Madrona to challenge the shift from general-purpose AI browsers toward specialized agentic automation.
Polar is currently free for casual use, with subscription tiers starting at $20 per month for users requiring higher credit limits. Although many early adopters currently treat the platform as a specialized automation utility alongside their primary browser, the company aims to establish itself as the definitive environment for browser-based agents. Sabrina Albert, a partner at Madrona, noted that building reliable agents on the logged-in web remains a significant challenge, one that a native browser is uniquely positioned to solve by leveraging existing user sessions and interaction patterns. The funding round also attracted prominent industry figures, including former GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke and Modal CEO Erik Bernhardsson.
