With a 2027 deadline looming to purge Chinese-origin magnets from defense procurement, the U.S. government is racing to secure a domestic supply of heavy rare earths. The strategy has shifted from simple mining to a complex industrial overhaul, with REalloys emerging as a central player in the Pentagon's tactical pivot.

While Mountain Pass remains the cornerstone of American light rare earth production, it lacks the heavy elements like dysprosium and terbium essential for fighter aircraft and guided missiles. This vulnerability has forced Washington to look beyond traditional extraction toward a full-scale restoration of the 'missing midstream'—the processing and metallization facilities currently dominated by China.

REalloys (NASDAQ:ALOY) has positioned itself at the center of this transition. The company recently secured a $1.7 million contract from the Defense Logistics Agency to develop modular processing technology for samarium and gadolinium. More significantly, the U.S. Army is in exclusive negotiations with the firm to establish a heavy rare earth processing complex at the Tooele Army Depot in Utah. If successful, this site would become the first military installation to host such commercial operations, aiming for full-scale output by 2028.

This industrial buildout is supported by a $100 million injection from institutional investors, signaling a broader market bet on the security of the North American supply chain. Beyond defense, the potential impact extends to major technology and automotive firms, including Tesla, Microsoft, and GE Aerospace, all of which face mounting pressure to diversify their reliance on critical minerals. By integrating feedstock from sources in Canada, Kazakhstan, and Brazil with domestic manufacturing, REalloys is attempting to bridge the gap between raw extraction and the finished components required for modern national security.
