Guyana’s ascent has been meteoric, moving from initial discovery to major exporter in just four years. By the end of May 2026, the country reached a daily extraction rate of 888,000 barrels. This momentum is set to accelerate as ExxonMobil integrates the $12.7 billion Uaru project, which will push output past the one-million-barrel milestone and likely eclipse Venezuela as the continent’s second-largest producer behind Brazil.
While Venezuela holds significant reserves, its path to growth remains hampered by decaying infrastructure that requires billions in investment and years of rehabilitation. Washington’s intervention in early 2026 also effectively neutralized long-standing threats from Caracas to annex the Essequibo region, a territory containing the lucrative 6.6-million-acre Stabroek Block. This security stabilization clears the way for a series of upcoming developments, including the Whiptail, Hammerhead, and Longtail projects. These facilities will not only increase crude output but also expand into natural gas, providing a vital resource for neighbors like Colombia who are currently grappling with supply shortages.
