Commerzbank Profit Doubles Amid UniCredit Takeover Pressure

A 94.2 percent surge in second-quarter net profit to €898 million has provided Commerzbank with a powerful bargaining chip as it navigates a looming takeover by Italy’s UniCredit. The Frankfurt-based lender reported record returns while simultaneously announcing a €1.2 billion share buyback to bolster its market standing.

Commerzbank’s latest figures reveal a net profit of €2.7 billion for the first half of 2026, driven by a 9 percent revenue increase to €3.3 billion in the second quarter. The bank’s net return on tangible equity hit a record 12.6 percent, keeping it on track to meet annual targets. Chief Executive Bettina Orlopp emphasized the strength of the firm's business model, noting that the bank aims for a total capital return of approximately €3.2 billion this year through dividends and buybacks.

These results arrive as UniCredit pushes closer to full control, currently holding 47.6 percent of Commerzbank's capital and nearly half of the voting rights. Despite the Italian lender's encroaching influence, Orlopp maintained that a majority stake at the next annual general meeting would not grant UniCredit unilateral power over structural decisions. She argued that any significant changes require a shared understanding between the banks and their stakeholders, highlighting the delicate power balance at Germany’s second-largest lender.
