Nigeria Targets $50 Billion Offshore Investment Surge

Nigeria plans to secure up to $50 billion in offshore oil and gas investments over the next five years, leveraging 22 new projects to revitalize its energy sector. The Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission confirmed these ambitions, aiming to bolster national infrastructure and solidify the country's status as a global upstream leader.

Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, chief executive of the NUPRC, emphasized that these capital inflows extend beyond raw production, focusing on job creation and long-term energy security. The commission has already cleared more than $57 billion in Field Development Plans since the start of 2024, with several of these initiatives reaching the Final Investment Decision stage. This momentum arrives as the industry recovers from previous volatility, with production hitting 1.56 million barrels of crude per day in June, the highest monthly average since April 2020.

Stable operations and a reduction in pipeline outages have allowed total crude and condensate output to climb for four consecutive months, reaching 1.735 million barrels per day in June. Current figures show output topping 1.8 million barrels daily in July, with August production sustaining a steady 1.78 million barrels. With oil and gas accounting for 80% of foreign currency earnings and 66% of budget revenue, the government views these offshore projects as the primary engine for near-term economic growth. The regulator expects total daily production to reach the 2 million barrel mark as these investments materialize.
