Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has reconstructed a harrowing timeline of the April 22 attack in southern Lebanon. After an initial strike on their vehicle, Khalil and fellow journalist Zeinab Faraj took refuge in a nearby building. A final, fatal strike hit the structure shortly after 16:00, while rescue teams were reportedly held back by ongoing bombardment. When the Red Cross and Lebanese army finally reached the site hours later, they discovered Khalil’s body.
Jonathan Dagher, head of RSF’s Middle East desk, characterized the events as potential war crimes, pointing to the targeting of clearly identified journalists and the deliberate interference with emergency responders. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) echoed these concerns, noting that Khalil had previously faced public incitement and death threats. Jodie Ginsberg, CEO of CPJ, condemned the recurring pattern of Israel blocking emergency services from reaching wounded media personnel.
