Danish Pension Fund Divests US Debt Amid Greenland Sovereignty Crisis

The Danish pension fund AkademikerPension is offloading $100 million in US Treasuries by month’s end, a move coinciding with escalating tensions over President Donald Trump’s threats to annex Greenland. While officials cite fiscal concerns, the divestment highlights growing European anxiety regarding the stability of US assets.

Investment director Anders Schelde maintained the decision stems from the poor state of US government finances, though he acknowledged that the President's bellicose rhetoric did not deter the move. Trump has repeatedly threatened tariffs and suggested the use of military force if the US fails to acquire Greenland by February 1. In response, Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has urged citizens to prepare for potential conflict, stating that while war remains unlikely, it cannot be ruled out.

Market reaction has been swift, with bond prices, equities, and the dollar softening as investors retreat from assets once viewed as the global standard for safety. With Europe collectively holding roughly $10 trillion in American holdings, analysts warn that a coordinated divestment could destabilize US markets. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent dismissed these concerns at the World Economic Forum in Davos, labeling the possibility of a boycott as illogical. However, economists note the US remains uniquely vulnerable due to its reliance on external funding to cover persistent budget deficits.
