X Opens Algorithm Codebase to Public Scrutiny

The company released its source code under the Apache v2 license, increasing the repository size by roughly 10 to 15 times. This update includes model configurations, filtering parameters, and the weighting systems that determine which posts appear in a user's feed. Keith Coleman, X’s VP of Product, noted that external researchers have already successfully run the platform’s scoring system outside of company infrastructure. While developers can now submit pull requests to improve the algorithm, X has excluded systems involving Grok to prevent bad actors from gaming content moderation rules.

Alongside the code release, X is launching a transparency tool within the app’s settings. Users who have posted ten or more times in the past month can download a JSON file detailing any labels applied to their content. This pilot feature, initially limited to accounts at least a year old, allows non-technical users to interpret their data by feeding it into an LLM alongside the public repository. Despite these efforts toward technical transparency, critics point out that X remains less forthcoming regarding financial metrics, user growth, and government takedown requests since transitioning to a private company under Elon Musk.
