The scale of the crisis is unprecedented. The $200 billion in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), signed into law by President Donald Trump, represents the largest rollback in the program's history. Feeding America estimates these changes equate to 9 billion lost meals annually, a figure that exceeds the entire yearly output of their national network of food banks and meal programs.
From New Mexico to Illinois, regional directors are sounding alarms. Pam Molitoris, executive director of the Central Illinois Food Bank, stated that her organization simply cannot absorb the shock, noting that private charities only provide one meal for every nine previously covered by SNAP. In Albuquerque, the Roadrunner Food Bank reported a surge in demand as 18,000 residents in the state lost coverage between July 2025 and April 2026. Jason Riggs, the bank’s director of advocacy, described the situation as a collapse of the country's primary defense against hunger.
