China wasted 360 terawatt-hours of wind and solar energy during the first half of the year, a 49% increase from 2023. This surge in clean power curtailment highlights a growing misalignment between the nation's rapid renewable capacity expansion and the physical limitations of its aging power grid infrastructure.
Analysts at Wood Mackenzie warn that this instability threatens the financial viability of future projects. With wind and solar curtailment rates projected to exceed 5% across dozens of provinces over the next decade, market volatility is becoming a major deterrent for investors.
