At Least 16 Dead After Targeted Attack on Hanukkah Celebration in Sydney
A violent assault on a Hanukkah gathering at Sydney’s Bondi Beach has left at least 16 people dead, including a gunman, and dozens hospitalized. The attack, which Australian authorities have condemned as a calculated act of antisemitic terrorism, occurred on the first day of the Jewish holiday.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese labeled the shooting an act of evil that struck at the heart of the nation. Among the chaos, reports emerged of a bystander, 43-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed, who sustained two gunshot wounds while tackling one of the shooters to prevent further casualties. The incident has drawn international condemnation, including from U.S. political figures who highlighted the rarity of such mass violence in Australia, a country that implemented strict gun control measures following the 1996 Port Arthur massacre.
