Off the coast of Oregon, a 100-kilowatt geothermal generator will settle onto the seafloor this September to harvest heat from a 750-degree hydrothermal vent. This pilot project, spearheaded by Seattle-based Endurance Energy, marks a strategic attempt to transform volatile underwater volcanic activity into a steady, emissions-free stream of commercial electricity.

The broader geothermal sector is currently seeing a surge of interest as the artificial intelligence boom drives a massive increase in data center energy requirements. The Rhodium Group estimates that if scaled rapidly, geothermal could satisfy up to 64 percent of the expected growth in data center power demand by the early 2030s. Simultaneously, the U.S. Department of Energy is banking on 'enhanced' geothermal drilling—which creates artificial heat sources—to power 65 million homes by midcentury. Despite higher costs compared to onshore sites, these marine-based and deep-drilling technologies are gaining traction among both federal policymakers and private investors looking for reliable, domestic energy alternatives.
