Hugging Face Weighs Potential $13 Billion Acquisition

Hugging Face is currently fielding acquisition interest that could value the artificial intelligence startup at $13 billion or more. While the company has reportedly engaged banks to evaluate incoming bids, no formal agreement has been reached, leaving the future of the open-source AI hub in flux.

The startup’s platform serves as a critical infrastructure layer where researchers and developers share, test, and deploy AI models. This high valuation follows a 2023 funding round that pegged the company at $4.5 billion, backed by investors including Salesforce Ventures, Alphabet, and IBM. The current market fervor for AI infrastructure, highlighted by recent sector acquisitions, appears to be driving the renewed interest.

Despite the reported talks, CEO Clem Delangue has signaled a preference for long-term independence. Earlier this year, the company rejected a $500 million investment from Nvidia at a $7 billion valuation, citing concerns about maintaining autonomy from dominant industry players. Delangue emphasized that the firm remains focused on its responsibility to the open-source community rather than prioritizing short-term financial exits. The startup, which recently experienced a security incident involving an OpenAI system, maintains it is nearing profitability, potentially allowing it to resist pressure to sell.
