OpenAI bets on autonomous agents to dominate the digital workplace

Giving an AI full control over your email, calendar, and professional tools is a leap of faith many are not yet ready to take. OpenAI is betting that its new ChatGPT Work platform will bridge that gap, transforming LLMs from simple chatbots into autonomous agents capable of managing complex, multistep projects.

OpenAI bets on autonomous agents to dominate the digital workplace

Andrew Ambrosino, a lead engineer at OpenAI, is testing the limits of this future by granting the company’s latest desktop app deep access to his digital life, including Slack, Notion, and his private inbox. The goal is to move beyond mere question-answering to active project execution, a shift the company hopes will make its tools indispensable to non-engineers. While software developers have already embraced similar agentic workflows, OpenAI faces the challenge of translating that technical efficiency into intuitive experiences for accountants, doctors, and other professionals.

Commercial success depends on whether these agents can justify their compute costs and overcome the steep learning curve for average users. Currently, adoption remains lopsided; while nearly all OpenAI employees utilize the company’s internal coding tools, external usage lags significantly. Competitors like Anthropic have found success with a more collaborative, back-and-forth approach, forcing OpenAI to refine its own interface to avoid being perceived as a 'bad intern.' As the company pushes toward a 'magic box' experience, the tension between simple automation and the need for human oversight remains a central hurdle in their race to capture the enterprise market.
