Alibaba Secures $10.2 Billion in Massive Hong Kong Share Placement

Alibaba Group has finalized an HK$80 billion share offering in Hong Kong, marking the city's largest follow-on equity deal since 2021. The tech giant priced 710 million newly issued shares at HK$112.7 each, targeting non-US investors to bolster capital reserves despite a recent sharp decline in quarterly net income.

The offering represents a 3.6 percent discount to the closing price of Alibaba’s New York-traded shares. Following the announcement, the company’s stock dropped by as much as 10 percent as investors weighed the capital raise against a 75 percent slump in second-quarter net income, a downturn largely attributed to aggressive spending on artificial intelligence initiatives.

This transaction highlights a broader surge in Hong Kong’s financial markets. Data from HKEX indicates that companies raised HK$210.2 billion through initial public offerings during the first half of 2026, a 92 percent increase compared to the previous year. The number of new listings climbed to 87, nearly doubling the volume seen in the same period a year prior. While the placement positions Alibaba to navigate a competitive landscape involving its financial services arm, Ant Group, the market response underscores the volatility currently facing major Chinese technology stocks.
