Philippe Mathieu, Equinor’s Executive Vice President for Exploration & Production International, confirmed the company’s high expectations during an energy conference in Stavanger. Equinor Targets Namibia’s Orange Basin for Major Offshore Oil Discovery
Norway’s Equinor is betting on the Orange Basin to deliver a significant discovery, mirroring the success of industry rivals in Namibian waters. By securing a 17.4% stake in Petroleum Exploration License 90, the energy major has officially joined the regional exploration race with a drill-ready prospect slated for 2026.

This entry marks a calculated expansion of Equinor’s Atlantic Margin portfolio, though the path to production remains complex. While Namibia aims to replicate the rapid growth seen in Guyana, the country faces significant infrastructure hurdles that complicate the monetization of these deepwater finds. Government officials are currently evaluating new incentives and financing structures to assist international majors in overcoming these logistical barriers as they transition from exploration to potential development.
