This logistical strain arrives as the world grapples with a 10% reduction in refining capacity, a deficit that has left Europe particularly exposed. Diesel prices on the continent have surged 70% since February, highlighting the dangers of structural dependence on imported fuels in an era of fractured trade.

Simultaneously, the war in Ukraine has evolved into a targeted campaign against Russian energy infrastructure. Daily drone strikes on refineries have hampered fuel output, forcing Moscow to maintain export bans that ripple through global markets. This tightening supply is compounded by shrinking inventories in North America and Latin America. Canadian production is slated to dip by 300,000 barrels daily due to upcoming maintenance in the oil sands, while Venezuela’s exports have slipped as the country exhausts its accessible storage buffers.

These combined pressures have left the global market heavily reliant on U.S. output, an unsustainable dependency as geopolitical instability persists. While nations scramble to secure alternative energy sources—ranging from new pipeline proposals to accelerated EV adoption—the immediate reality is one of rising inflationary pressure and heightened debt. Analysts estimate that Middle Eastern supply alone is currently down by 5 to 7 million barrels per day, a gap that suggests the transition to a more secure energy footing will be both prolonged and economically painful.
