OpenAI Introduces Advertising to ChatGPT Tiers in India

OpenAI is bringing commercial advertising to its ChatGPT Free and Go subscription tiers across India. Following a recent update to its terms of service, the company aims to monetize its massive user base in the region, which currently accounts for over 100 million weekly active participants in the AI assistant.

The rollout begins with 50 initial brand partners, facilitated by strategic collaborations with agencies WPP and Omnicom. To scale this infrastructure, the company plans to launch an ad manager next month, allowing marketers to execute campaigns with a minimum daily budget of ₹725. Dave Dugan, head of global ads solutions, noted that the system is designed to place business messaging within high-context moments during user decision-making processes.

This expansion follows similar ad integrations in the United States and Europe. The move serves as a critical revenue-building effort ahead of a potential public offering. OpenAI recorded $6.7 billion in revenue for the quarter ending June 2026, and the company remains focused on aggressive growth, supported by the recent hiring of a former Uber executive to spearhead its Indian operations. These commercial initiatives build on a period of heavy investment in the region, including the introduction of a sub-$5 ChatGPT Go plan and extensive promotional visibility during major sporting events like the Indian Premier League.
