Solar power serves as the primary engine of this growth, contributing 164.59 GW to the total. Wind follows with 58.14 GW, while hydropower, bio-power, and nuclear assets account for the remainder. With total national generation capacity now at 552 GW, clean energy sources officially account for more than 54% of the country's power mix.
India Hits 300 GW Renewable Milestone Amid Grid Strains
India has officially surpassed 300 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel capacity, reaching 60% of its ambitious 2030 target. Minister Pralhad Joshi confirmed the milestone this week, positioning the nation to hit its 500 GW goal while simultaneously grappling with an electricity grid that is struggling to keep pace with the rapid energy expansion.
Despite these gains, the rapid installation of generation assets has outstripped the expansion of transmission infrastructure. This imbalance has led to high curtailment rates, where power producers are forced to waste generated energy because the grid cannot absorb it. To mitigate these losses and secure buyers, developers are increasingly integrating battery storage into their photovoltaic projects. Secretary Santosh Sarangi noted that this shift is now essential to maintaining the momentum of India’s renewable boom and ensuring the stability of the energy supply.
