Launched in 2023 as a digital photo journal, the application now prioritizes private sharing, collaborative albums, and chronological memory features. By eschewing advertising in favor of a subscription model, the company targets users disillusioned with AI-generated content and platform-wide algorithmic curation. Subscribers gain access to advanced features like video support, GIF integration, and extended photo history.
Photo-sharing app Retro secures $21 million in Series A funding
Former Instagram product engineers Nathan Sharp and Ryan Olson have secured $21 million in Series A funding for their niche social platform, Retro. The startup, operating under the name Lone Palm Labs, has reached a valuation exceeding $100 million as it pivots away from algorithm-driven feeds toward intimate, friend-focused content sharing.
Market data from Appfigures indicates that Retro has surpassed 7 million downloads since its inception. While the subscriber base remains a subset of total users, in-app spending has surged by over 460% during the last six months. Investors backing this growth include Thrive Capital, Figma CEO Dylan Field, and a broad group of venture firms such as Scribble Ventures, Box Group, and Imaginary Ventures. The funding round, finalized in December, positions the company to further challenge the dominance of creator-centric social media.
