Public resistance to police license plate tracking grows

Flock currently operates more than 120,000 cameras across the U.S., designed to track vehicle movements for law enforcement. However, reports of police abuse have triggered a wave of cancellations, with dozens of communities rejecting the devices over privacy concerns. The new data indicates that a plurality of citizens no longer believes these tools meaningfully enhance local safety.

While Flock maintains that its technology retains broad support, CEO Garrett Langley recently signaled a push for compromise following a spike in vandalism targeting the cameras. Critics, including the ACLU, argue that the company’s internal safeguards are insufficient to address fundamental threats to civil liberties, maintaining that the hardware remains an invasive presence in public life.
