Nvidia is reportedly eyeing Hugging Face to bypass its reliance on hyperscalers and frontier labs. As OpenAI and Google develop proprietary hardware like the Jalapeño chip, Nvidia aims to capture a larger share of the model-making sector. By acquiring the primary platform for open-weight developers—essentially the GitHub of the AI era—Nvidia gains direct access to a vast user base it can steer toward its own hardware and standards.
Capital is flooding into a sector historically defined by open access. Stripe’s $7 billion acquisition of OpenRouter and Nvidia’s $6 billion deal for Poolside underscore this trend. While only a small percentage of companies currently utilize open-weight models, usage is climbing as businesses seek to optimize high-volume inference costs. Nik Albarran of Jellyfish notes that companies providing customer service chats are already tuning these models to manage expenses, though frontier models remain superior for complex reasoning tasks.
