Chinese Coking Coal Prices Hit Record 46% Monthly Surge

A catastrophic mining accident in Shanxi province, coupled with aggressive safety crackdowns, has throttled domestic supply and sent coking coal futures on the Dalian exchange to a historic 46% monthly gain. This unprecedented rally shatters the previous record set just one month prior as the steelmaking raw material enters uncharted territory.

The volatility stems from a sustained supply crunch that began in May following the deadliest mining disaster in years, which claimed over 80 lives. Markets reacted sharply to the subsequent safety inspections that effectively sidelined production capacity. By Monday afternoon, futures on the Dalian exchange climbed another 6%, cementing a trajectory that eclipses the 38% surge recorded in July 2025.

Global steelmakers, particularly in India, are now absorbing the shock. With Indian industry dependent on imports for 95% of its metallurgical coal requirements, the elevated costs are rapidly eroding profit margins. Mining giant BHP attributed this tightening to a convergence of factors: slower development of new mine sites, geopolitical friction involving Iran, and persistent logistical disruptions at Australian export terminals. As the global seaborne market struggles to balance, the premium for Australian metallurgical coal has already climbed 25% during the first seven months of the year.
