Phil Schiller steps back as Apple leadership turnover accelerates

Phil Schiller, the veteran executive who oversaw the App Store for nearly a decade, has stepped down from his leadership post. This departure coincides with the appointment of John Ternus as CEO, marking a significant transition period for Apple as a wave of long-serving senior figures exit the company.

Phil Schiller steps back as Apple leadership turnover accelerates

Schiller, who joined Apple in 1987, will transition into the role of Apple Fellow. While the company characterizes this as a position for outstanding technical contributors, insiders view it as a precursor to his eventual retirement. During his tenure, Schiller navigated the high-profile Epic Games antitrust litigation, which resulted in a mixed court ruling that forced the company to allow external payment links for developers.

Responsibility for the App Store will now shift to Carson Oliver, a 14-year veteran of the division. The department is simultaneously moving from marketing to the services wing under Eddy Cue. This leadership reshuffle follows a string of departures, including COO Jeff Williams, general counsel Kate Adams, and Apple Pay head Jennifer Bailey. Furthermore, the loss of Vision Pro lead Paul Meade to OpenAI has already triggered a downsizing of the headset's development team. John Ternus now faces the challenge of stabilizing this core leadership group while steering the company through its next phase of hardware and software development.
