The Department of Defense launched ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government to bolster productivity without compromising security. With 1.7 million unique users already onboarded, the portal serves as a centralized hub that bypasses the data collection common in public AI products. ChatGPT Mil focuses on document-heavy workflows, including logistics, policy drafting, and routine planning, mirroring the experience of its commercial counterpart.
Pentagon Deploys Custom ChatGPT and Grok for Military Operations
Three million Pentagon personnel now have access to specialized, secure versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok. These tools, hosted on the GenAI.mil portal, allow civilian and military staff to leverage generative AI for administrative and strategic tasks while shielding sensitive government data from the risks of standard consumer-facing platforms.

Conversely, the military has framed the integration of Grok through SpaceX’s Starshield AI in more tactical terms, promising immediate gains in knowledge continuity and mission precision. This expansion follows a notable exclusion of Anthropic’s Claude model from the Pentagon’s suite; the agency currently faces a legal dispute with the lab over safety guardrails and supply-chain risk designations. To maintain a technological edge, the Pentagon continues to build a diverse AI ecosystem, maintaining existing partnerships with Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Nvidia, and Reflection AI.
