White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the policy change one day after U.S. District Judge Trevor N. McFadden declined to intervene in the administration’s exclusion of the AP. The government had barred the wire service from briefings and Air Force One travel because the outlet refused to adopt the administration’s mandated terminology, specifically the “Gulf of America” branding required by a January executive order.

WHCA president Eugene Daniels condemned the takeover, stating that an independent press must not have its membership chosen by the government. The association, which has managed pool rotations since the 1950s, was not consulted before the announcement. Civil liberties groups and veteran journalists expressed deep concern, with many drawing direct parallels to state-controlled media environments. Peter Baker, a New York Times correspondent who previously covered the Kremlin, noted that the move mirrors tactics used by Vladimir Putin to ensure only compliant journalists gain access to power. The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and the ACLU warned that conditioning press access on ideological compliance fundamentally undermines the First Amendment and eliminates government accountability.
