Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, confirmed the new record, noting that the market surpassed the prior $5.819 benchmark as fuel scarcity intensifies. The climb reflects a broader tightening of global middle distillate supplies, compounded by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and heightened volatility near the Strait of Hormuz. Farmers entering the harvest season and retailers preparing for holiday inventory are now facing significantly higher logistics costs, as diesel remains the primary fuel for the nation's freight network.
U.S. Diesel Prices Climb to Unprecedented Heights
The national average for diesel reached $5.820 per gallon on Thursday, eclipsing the previous peak set in June 2022. This surge arrives as supply chain disruptions in the Middle East and Russia collide with peak seasonal demand, placing renewed pressure on the American economy and the Federal Reserve’s inflation strategy.

Simultaneously, gasoline costs are trending toward their most expensive Labor Day weekend in nominal terms. Data indicates prices currently sit at $4.125 per gallon, roughly 92 cents higher than the same period last year. Analysts estimate this uptick will add $1.39 billion to total consumer fuel spending during the upcoming holiday, further complicating the economic outlook as refining capacity struggles to compensate for restricted exports from key global producers.
