Qatar Positions LNG Fleet Amid Persistent Gulf Volatility

The movement of these ships follows a period of stagnation for the world's third-largest LNG exporter. Qatar declared force majeure earlier this year after Iranian missile strikes hit the Ras Laffan complex, effectively halting output and paralyzing transit through the Strait of Hormuz. While state-owned QatarEnergy successfully facilitated a single transit in late July, it stopped short of a sustained operational restart, leaving international customers waiting for a consistent supply chain.

QatarEnergy previously estimated that a safe passage through the strait would allow a 50% recovery of production capacity within one month, scaling to 80% after two months. However, the current reality remains starkly different. As Iran and the United States continue to exchange strikes, the waterway has become increasingly treacherous. Qatar has maintained loading operations, yet the resulting cargoes have either remained idle or been diverted to regional neighbors like Kuwait rather than venturing through the contested maritime corridor.
