As Sweden heads to the polls this Sunday, security agencies report that while the nation is not currently a top-tier target for direct Russian electoral interference, it remains a persistent subject of broader hybrid warfare aimed at eroding institutional trust and public confidence in democratic processes.
Despite this, the threat persists through slower, incremental tactics. Recent activity includes a pro-Russian troll network known as Matryoshka, which circulated fabricated videos and allegations of fraud targeting Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. Furthermore, the Swedish Military Intelligence and Security Service (MUST) continues to warn of long-term hybrid warfare against Nato members. Unlike other European contests, however, Sweden’s political landscape offers limited opportunities for exploitation; a rare parliamentary consensus on support for Ukraine has left little room for foreign actors to successfully wedge the electorate on the conflict.
