Amazon Prime Video pivots to short-form news to court Gen Z

Amazon Prime Video is integrating short-form news clips into its platform, challenging the dominance of TikTok and Instagram among younger audiences. By offering localized and national stories through its existing app, the streaming giant aims to capture the attention of Gen Z viewers who increasingly favor bite-sized video consumption.

The new feature populates the News destination within the Prime Video app, specifically appearing in Trending Topics and Local News carousels. While currently optimized for TVs and living room devices, the company confirmed plans for a broader rollout across mobile apps and web browsers. This strategic expansion follows a wider industry trend, with Peacock, HBO Max, Netflix, and Disney+ all introducing similar short-form content throughout the year to accommodate shifting viewer habits.

Despite the technical expansion, the challenge remains one of engagement rather than just duration. According to Pew Research, younger demographics prioritize content that feels organic and unpolished, contrasting with traditional broadcast aesthetics. Amazon has yet to confirm whether its mobile implementation will adopt the vertical orientation popularized by social media rivals, leaving the question of whether a streaming interface can replicate the authentic feel of a social feed unanswered.
