Evan Greer, director of Fight for the Future, dismissed the CEOs’ recent appeals for restraint as self-interested posturing. While acknowledging that the industry’s warnings about AI risks carry weight, Greer argued that relying on these figures to draft policy is a fundamental error. Instead, she urged Congress to prioritize input from independent researchers and affected communities over the guidance of industry insiders.
This tension has spilled into the halls of Congress, where House Speaker Mike Johnson recently suggested that legislators are ill-equipped to regulate the sector. Johnson argued that oversight should be a collaborative partnership with the corporations leading the field. This stance drew a sharp rebuke from Rep. Ted Lieu, who compared the logic to suggesting Congress shouldn't oversee medicine or aviation simply because members lack technical expertise. Meanwhile, Donald Trump offered a different take, suggesting on social media that the only guardrail required for AI is a high-IQ president.
