The International IDEA annual report, which tracks democratic performance across 174 nations, paints a grim picture of the rule of law. Researchers found that the US, under President Donald Trump, has become the central driver of this global downturn. The report documents how the executive branch has systematically consolidated power, pursuing personal objectives while actively retaliating against political opponents and weakening institutional checks.
The Erosion of American Governance
The deterioration is measurable. Nearly half of the indicators used by the institute—including press freedom, judicial independence, and economic equality—have reached their lowest points in decades within the United States. Between 2020 and 2025, the country recorded seven statistically significant declines across multiple governance metrics. The report highlights the legislative branch's failure to provide oversight, citing the recent conflict in Iran as evidence of the executive bypassing congressional war powers. Furthermore, 11 people have been killed by federal agents during anti-immigration operations, while the domestic social safety net faces severe cuts alongside record-breaking wealth concentration at the top 1%.
